She asked “Why are free-to-play games dominating the gaming world lately?”
During my last visit, I was chatting with my grandmother. She loves me and still gives me money although I have a full time work. She cares so much about my health and well-being, this time she got worried about me spending too much on gaming and will not be able to pay my mortgage.
I told her, “Grandma, don’t worry please. Some of the games I play are actually free-to-play.” She was baffled and asked, “How do those developers even make money?” After I broke it down for her, she felt a lot better.
That convo got me thinking — there might be others who don’t get how free-to-play games work. So, I’m here to explain why this model is smart business and how it can be surprisingly profitable.
When my grandmother was curious about my gaming habits, she asked, “What exactly is a free-to-play game?”
I explained that a free-to-play (F2P) game is a video game you can download and play without paying upfront.
These games are everywhere — on your phone, PC, or console — and come in all sorts of genres like action, strategy, adventure, and more.
This quick chat inspired me to break down how these games work and why they’re such a big deal in the gaming world.
When my grandmother asked how free-to-play game developers make money, I explained that they use a few smart strategies, like in-app purchases and ads.
In-App Purchases: These are optional buys within the game, like extra lives, cool weapons, or character skins. They help players level up faster or just look awesome, and they’re a big moneymaker for developers. For instance, in Fortnite, you can buy in-game currency to snag new outfits or glider skins for your character, making your experience even better.
Advertising: Many free-to-play games make money by showing ads to players, like banners or videos. Developers earn cash when these ads are viewed or clicked. This is common in mobile games, but you’ll also find it in a few PC games like Trackmania, where in-game billboards advertise real-life products.
Subscriptions: Some games offer subscriptions that unlock extra content or features. This brings in steady income for developers. I told her I will e doing this soon in my Substack site Technology, Gaming, Movies, and Social Media. She wanted to know more.
Sponsorships and Licensing: Developers can partner with brands or license their games to others. For example, Fortnite often collaborates with popular franchises like Spider-Man or Dragonball Z to offer exclusive in-game items.
Paid DLCs: Free games may sell downloadable content (DLCs), adding new maps, characters, or weapons. Destiny 2 is a great example, where players pay for extra content to enhance their experience.
For a free-to-play game to succeed, it must attract a large player base and ensure fair gameplay for everyone, regardless of spending.
She then asked “Why are free-to-play games dominating the gaming world lately?” I said rree-to-play games have become more common for a few reasons and explained it to her in simple language.
Increased Reach and Accessibility: The growth of mobile gaming and app stores has made free-to-play games easier to access. Anyone with a smartphone or tablet can download and play these games, regardless of their financial situation.
Lower Barrier to Entry: Since F2P games are free to download, more players are likely to try them, expanding the potential player base.
Microtransactions: Developers can support their games by offering in-game purchases, like extra lives or cosmetic items, generating significant revenue.
Rise of Casual Gaming: With more casual gamers entering the market, F2P games cater to those who prefer not to spend heavily on games.
Advertising: Displaying ads in-game is another revenue source for developers.
Social Aspect: F2P games often enhance the social experience by allowing players to connect with friends or others online.
Overall, the F2P model provides developers with new monetization methods while offering players a low-cost, accessible gaming experience.
